R&B Singer Akon Expected In Kampala ‘For Business’

Pop star and Senegalese-American businessman Akon is expected to Uganda, where he will meet the country’s veteran leader Yoweri Museveni, officials confirmed.
Akon, real name Aliaune Damala Badara Thiam is set to arrive to arrive in Kampala later today, Isaac Kigozi, the Director at Trade and Investment said in an emailed statement to this website.
“Akon will be meeting President Museveni as well as several Ministry departments and the private sector … he will be coming in with a delegation of CEOs from over 13 companies from USA, Turkey, UK and France,” Kigozi said without providing detail of the visit.
In December last year, Akon announced that he was going ahead with plans to construct a $6 billion a futuristic city in Senegal where nationals can live and work—and where members of the African Diaspora will always be welcome.
The 47-year-old had estimated works to begin later this year, despite the pandemic’s devastating effects on global tourism.
Akon has built his solar business, Akon Lighting Africa, with credit lines of $1 billion from Chinese backers. The venture is said to have structured about $400 million of solar deals to date according to Financial News Terminal Bloomberg.
The International Energy Agency estimates about half the world’s 1.2 billion people without ready access to electricity live in Sub-Saharan Africa.
